Description

This beautiful genno (Japanese hammer) head has been hand forged with laminated faces.

From the Tōroku forge in Sanjo city, this beautiful hammer head features the two faces that are hallmark of Japanese hammer design - one that is ground flat with crisp corners for driving chisels, and a second that has been domed in order to facilitate easy driving of nails and the practice of kigoroshi (compressing tenons).

The finish on the sides of the hammer head is a beautiful satin silver over the hand-filed finish. Its final shaping has been done by the smith using fine-cut files, and he has chosen to leave their characteristic cutting marks. It is a lovely effect.

The finish also serves to highlight the fact that both faces have been laminated using harder high carbon steel. This means that the force generated by the hammer strikes is delivered with hard steel, but the feedback for the user is cushioned by the softer mild steel that makes up the bulk of the head.

Please note that this listing is for a hammer head only, and it does not ship with a handle. As you will be making your own handle to suit from your preferred choice of timber, we suggest adding a small sized metal wedge
