Japanese Carpentry Joints with Yuji Kanesada-san 2025

$450.00

Description

In conjunction with the Australian Wooden Boat Festival and Koitaya Design/Make/Teach, JTA is once again proud to be a part of Yuji Kanesada's teaching schedule in Australia in 2025. These classes will take place in Canberra, Hobart and Sydney.

Yuji Kanesada is a daiku (Japanese carpenter) and builder of Minka (traditional Japanese houses).

Constructed purely from timber, these beautiful buildings use intricate joinery, wooden pins and wedges that give them the strength and flexibility to far outlive their builders.

Hiroshi Yamaguchi is a Canberra-based and Japan-trained fine furniture designer and maker. To assist with the teaching load, Hiroshi will support Yuji-san throughout many classes, and also take the role of main tutor with Yuji supporting in a few sessions.

If you are interested in the unique and highly developed joinery of traditional Japanese carpentry, these workshops give you the chance to learn under an English-speaking Japanese carpenter with decades of professional experience.

These classes are appropriate for both beginners and intermediate woodworkers.

Each day of learning focuses on a different and specific type of joint. You can book each day separately, and you are welcome to join multiple days!

Please note that these classes are spread across three venues in Canberra, Hobart and Sydney. Discounts will apply when you attend multiple classes regardless of venue.

The full gallery of photos from the 2023 classes can be found in Hiroshi's shared photo library here.

Presented By

The Joinery

  • Kainokuchi

A straight end-to-end joint used for very tall pillars that must be assembled in sections.

This joint is used most frequently to join the parts of the central pillar (shinbashira 心柱) of a pagoda.

Literally translates as "shell mouth joint".

  • Miyajima

Miyajima Tsugi was often used in the region around Miyajima in Hiroshima prefecture.

This joinery is quite unusual and is used when 3 sides are exposed the joint needs to be visually subtle.

This project will give a simple beautiful sample.

  • Osaka Gate Post

Osaka Castle Otemon Gate's pillar splice, this is one of the most complex and fascinating examples of Japanese joinery.

With its unique interlocking system, was only in 1983 when a X-ray scan was carried out to solve the mystery of the joinery.

  • Kanawa Tsugi

One of the strongest traditional joints to extend the length of the beam.

The kanawa tsugi uses exactly the same shape on each side of the joinery to give a beautiful look as well. It uses a pin to interlock the two components.

  • Compound Mitred Box

Yuji will be teaching the basics of the sashigane (Japanese square) usage through 2 simple hands-on projects, including a compound angled box project.

You will learn how to lay out angled joinery without having to use protractors to measure degrees at all.

Feedback

Enrolled in the class and I must admit I was a bit apprehensive to attend because I am a total novice.

Well YUJI and HIROSHI along with there crew and of course not to forget MITCH and the JTA team, welcomed me and made me feel very comfortable right through the day.

It was so interesting to see talented artisans working with their hands and giving guidance and insight to this wonderful art. It is an art!

All the tools provided were items from JTA. All beautiful functional pieces.

All the girls and guys at the course really turned out some great pieces.
It goes to prove that when you have good guidance and patient, understanding teachers, difficult tasks can be achieved.

THANKS for a fantastic day.
