Japanese Temple Building - A Lecture by Yuji Kanesada

$15.00
Date

Description

Have you ever wanted to know what goes into the building, maintenance and restoration of a Japanese temple?

Yuji Kanesada is a master carpenter who has worked on over a dozen structures of religious, cultural or historical significance throughout Japan. During his February 2025 teaching trip, he has generously agreed to speak about his time working on these special structures.

From shrines to temples to teahouses to castles, Yuji's career has seen him repairing, replacing significant portions of, or building from the ground up an incredible selection of traditional buildings. We have included a couple in the photos of this listing as examples.

In this talk Yuji will place you in his shoes for a behind-the-scenes look at the joinery required and what makes these structures so special other than their use.

This is also an opportunity for you to ask the burning questions you have about this amazing trade, and what sets it apart.

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. As space is limited, we encourage you to book your spot through this page.

Two talks will be given: 5-7pm

  • 1st Feb: Koitoya Workshop - 4/18 Maryborough St, Fyshwick ACT 2609
  • 15th Feb: JTA Showroom - 29 Production Ave, Kogarah, NSW 2217

Additionally, Yuji will give a talk on Hobart as part of the AWBF Symposium on Saturday 8th February at 5pm. The subject of this lecture will be focused on Yuji's other great passion - the building of traditional Japanese farm houses called minka, as well as forestry practices to support these trades in Japan. No booking is needed for this talk - please check the details on the AWBF Symposium site.
