Description

The Kuksa is a traditional Finnish vessel. Customarily carved from the burl of birch trees, it has particular importance to the Sami people and can be a possession so highly prized that it becomes the only cup a person uses.

This basic kit gives you the chance to carve your own Kuksa-style vessel. Importantly, the most arduous part of the work has already been completed, as the cup's bowl has already been excavated and the handle's hole is already drilled.

This kuksa blank is made from Katsura timber, an asian hardwood that is very light and relatively dense. It works well and can take crisp detail.

Also included in the kit is a rasp with a half-round side and a flat side. This leaves a rough finish and can be used to rough out your desired shape. Sandpaper of #150, #240 and #400 grit is also included, to bring your beautiful creation to a smooth finish.

We suggest you not use detergent on your wooden kuksa, and using it regularly is the best way to make sure it does not dry out too much, which can lead to splitting.

As we experiment with different finishes for our kuksa, we will update this page.

Awesome Kuksa kit!

I had a great time carving my kuksa. The pics in the instructions were good (the words were Japanese), and even though there was no step 11, I feel my finished kuksa was a 10! I didn't use the included file at all; instead, I used a couple of other small carving knives I have in my collection. The wood was great quality, and the way the grain falls on my finished piece is perfect. I'd definitely buy this kit again if I needed to make another!
