$78.10

Description

This Plane is a traditional Japanese style plane which cuts on the pull stroke. The blade and chip breaker are held in place by compression and is adjusted with a Japanese hammer or wooden mallet. The blade is made from white paper steel laminated with soft iron. The plane's body is made of Japanese White Oak.

In general, traditional Japanese planes require maintenance to the sole. This plane has been relieved behind the blade and is ready to use. It does not require tuning to the sole of the plane. Some tuning to the supporting timber around the blade may be require before first use.

Specifications:

Blade Width: 48mm

Plane Body Length: 210mm

Plane Body Width: 60 mm

Blade angle: 42 degree

In regards to Japanese smoothing planes; please note that the sole of the plane has been prepared ready for use as a smoothing plane and so no adjustments are required for this, however timber planes may need some adjustment purely because of the nature of wood moving (expanding and contracting). Quite beautiful coming out of the box! Needed a fair bit of tuning prior to first use, didn't have any whetstones to sharpen the blade - could probably do with one. Still managed do get some nice shavings from it anyway. Great for a first time plane

Hi Rachel, glad that your plane is set up and giving you some nice shavings! Your plane will definitely benefit from a sharpen, it probably is about two-thirds as sharp as it can be out of the box and will need maintenance when it's put to use. We recommend our complete sharpening kit for those who don't yet own any sharpening gear, if you'd like to discuss technique or advice please email info@japanesetools.com.au . Happy planing!

The plane was advertised as ready to go out of the box. I could have used it straight away but I pulled the blade and eased the blade bed a little. Touched up the edge and tweaked the chip breaker. A simple job to put it back together and with a couple of taps I was pulling good straight shavings. Really good value for money. A good first Japanese plane.
