Description

These beautiful marking knives are hand forged in Sanjo, Niigata prefecture.

Their classic shape and blackened finish make them a simple yet elegant tool to use. We now carry these marking knives in a wide variety in shapes, sizes and materials.

For those who are looking for a premium Japanese steel in their knives, these blue paper steel (aogami #2) edges are the anser. In day-to-day use, the very tip of the kiridashi can be quite exposed, and we have found the blue paper steel range to have less delicate ends. This is, of course, relative - drive any kiridashi hard enough into your material and you may end up saying good-bye to the last millimetre or two of your cutting edge.

The next decision to be made about a kiridashi concerns it's size, and this is entirely up to personal preference and the uses you will have for a knife. If you are working on small projects and prefer a pen-like feel in the hand, consider a size 15mm and smaller. If you would prefer that your kiridashi feel more like a carving knife, we suggest a size 18mm or larger. All take a magnificent edge, but if you would like your knife to take on extra duties such as carving and tuning the corners of your joints, the larger sizes will prove more useful as they have longer cutting edges.

Finally, consider whether you are right or left handed, and choose the option below accordingly.

Please note that, as with all Japanese chisels and planes, flattening the back of a kiridashi will bring it to a higher level of accuracy and sharpness.

Length: 120mm
Thickness: 2mm
