Heavy Sharpening for Carving Tools

We are often asked for advice on how to get chips out of curved gouges, or resharpen them when they are a long way gone. In this video, Christian builds the simple jig that we use for these tasks.

The Inspo

This jig is based on a design from Michihamono, and we build ours using Atoma diamond sheets that we greatly prefer for their longevity.

The Abrasives

In this video Christian uses a #600 sheet. However, we have also had great success with a #1200, and we recommend you not use anything coarser than these two options.

The Final Steps

The advantage of being able to finish on waterstones means that there is no upper limit on the fineness of the edge that can be achieved using this jig.
