Following a highly successful plane making workshop in our space in 2018, we are extremely happy to announce that JTA will once again host Hiroshi Yamaguchi of Koitoya Design/Make/Teach in 2019.
Hiroshi-san designs his plane making workshop to foster both fundamental and advanced woodworking skills in his students, and this course is extremely approachable for woodworkers of all skill levels. Hiroshi's depth of knowledge on Japanese tools and woodworking techniques is complemented beautifully by his focus on helping his students to also understand the materials they are working with.
In this course students are provided with both a chisel and plane blade, purchased from renowned Tokyo tool seller Inoue Hamono. The plane blade is made from premium blue paper steel, while the chisel is a white paper steel. Students spend the first two days setting up both of these high quality hand-forged tools. This gives students the opportunity to discover, explore and implement all the necessary knowledge and techniques to coax out every bit of the considerable potential of both tools.
Days three, four and five are spent transforming Hiroshi's carefully selected, dried and milled wooden blanks into dai of exceptional quality, using the process to discuss in-depth the intricacies of Japanese plane design and function. Students have the opportunity to set their own plane's bedding angle, as well as deciding how they would like configure the sole.
Another aspect that also distinguishes Hiroshi-san's program is his integration of a brass mouth insert into the plane-making process. This gives students a very high level of control over their mouth tolerances, regardless of experience or skill level. Because the mouth of student's planes can be kept so tight with the brass plate, the fineness of the shavings these planes are capable of is incredible.
For the first time, following through on feedback received from last year's course, Hiroshi san is also offering an optional sixth day to his lucky students! This day will give students the opportunity to complete a project focused on getting the most out of their new plane, and showing them how their new hand-made Japanese plane can be best used on everyday projects.
Cost of the 5-day program is $1080, to be carried out over the June long weekend and the following weekend. The optional sixth day will cost $150.
Spots can be secured with a $200 deposit. For full details on the course and payment dates, please click here.
